Certificates of No Impediment: Same-sex couples

Australians seeking to enter into a same-sex marriage overseas can now able apply for a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage.

"This important change will allow same-sex couples to take part in overseas marriage ceremonies, and be considered married according to the laws of that country", the Attorney General Nicola Roxon said in announcing this amendment on February 2.

Some foreign countries require foreign nationals to present a Certificate of No Impediment before they are able to legally marry in that country.
